With temperatures hovering not far above freezing, and the sun having vanished, no major planting has been undertaken yet. The shed project is still unfinished as well, for weather-related reasons. A slow start to the spring. But also one that’s allowed for some relaxed contemplation, musing on seeds, and the steady accumulation of tools for the season.

The planting list is becoming clearer: snap peas and chard going in first, along with work on a growing herb collection (rosemary repotted, check), later for tomatoes, cucumbers, beans and nasturtium, among others…

One puzzle remains: an outer length of brick wall, outside the yard, with about 6-8 inches of poor soil between it and a paved sidewalk. Currently it’s filled with eager weeds and one old, climber of a rosebush, which has been left a skinny, scraggly thing.

What, one wonders, is best to grow along that brick wall? Something well-behaved and which does not spread, something that does well in high heat and a dry summer, something that will keep the weeds at bay and offer a pleasant sight for passers-by… Something simple. Suggestions?
